Marketing by email starts with a good subject line.You probably get many emails each day and whether you hit the delete button or not depends on how captivating the subject line is.

So how to you craft a good subject line?

It must be personal or have that appearance, not some corporate line that looks like a sales pitch.Which of these appeals to you most?

1.30% discount on all shoes.

2.Holiday bonus get 10% off.

3.Have you heard the rumour?

4.Have you seen this?

Yes it would be the last two wouldn't it?

But be sure the content of your email has some relevance to the subject line you have used.If the reader feels they have been deceived they will more than likely opt out of your list.

A subject line that reads like an editorial can also work.For example:

"How this company could change your life"

"Internet marketing guru explains the new secret opt in weapon"

An incomplete thought is another good technique because it leaves the reader wanting to know what the thought was.For example:

"I never thought this would happen to me…."

There is also a trend in putting the recipients first name in the subject line.This is now so common that people are using it as a reason to delete such emails before they are even opened.So use this technique only after you have built up a loyal and faithful list of subscribers.

Your best bet is to look at what techniques spam emailers are using.They tend to copy what good copywriters are doing.Once the technique is adopted by all spammers,readers become immune and opt out.
